Technical specifications

The system begins with a low viscosity 100% reactive High Molecular Weight Methacrylate (HMWM) penetrating healer/sealer primer. The primer bleeds into the concrete cracks and pores, and then reacts with the resin in the overlay to give the system an integrated chemical bond to the substrate. This means that it has roots that will not allow it to delaminate without a failure well below the original bond line. The overlay material consists of a mixed material of rock, sand, and polyester resin. The PPC has a low modulus of elasticity so it resists cracking under the stresses of heavy traffic and normal bridge deck movements. By using plastic without cement, PPC has extremely low permeability.

High performance, low permeability concrete overlays typically strive to allow permeability of less than 1500 coulombs, our PPC will allow less than 200 coulombs (and usually very close to zero). This keeps moisture and chlorides from penetrating into the substrate decking. In addition to the low permeability of the material, it is equally important to resist cracking. Although many overlay materials have low permeability, they crack, which gives moisture and chlorides a clear path to causing corrosion and freeze-thaw stresses at the bond line. Through the use of strong aggregates of the proper gradation and very resilient resin, the surface of PPC is 10 times more wear resistant than high performance concrete. The surface of PPC is typically tined for macro-texturing and water dispersion and receives broadcast friction sand for micro texturing. The final surface exhibits skid resistance unequalled in the industry. In the first few years of service the friction coefficient will increase into the mid 40s, and find equilibrium in the mid to upper 40s, where it will stay for the life of the overlay.
